![]() May 10 Mild dry spring weather continues pushing the crop progress a little for both berry crops and tree fruit. Sulfur is a product that has not experienced disease resistance issues. Buy 2 or more insecticide or fungicide products, and alternate their use as I advise the timing in the weeks ahead to prevent resistance by insects or diseases. Conventional growers can use Captan, or Immunox. Fungicides for organic growers would include dusting sulfur or wettable sulfur. Looks like the second week of May is going to stay dry so a fungicide spray is optional. You should always put on a fungicide spray to prevent these diseases so get the spray on now if the weather forecast looks dry for a day or two. It is important to put fungicides on your fruit trees, grapevines and berry crops to protect them from powdery mildew, scab, or other fungal diseases. I noticed on Liberty and Gala apple trees some powdery mildew infection. The first scab sprays went on in late April and because the season has been dry, there is very little to no scab present in the apple and pear orchards that have been treated. We are also monitoring for apple or pear scab presently. Good products for SWD control are Spinosad and Malathion. When the berry and cherry crops get to full size and are just starting to color, you will want to make your first application of a control spray. This seems to make it easy for the SWD to enter the trap but hard to find their way out. The hole should be no larger than about 1/8 th of an inch in diameter. The cup traps will need to have small holes punched in the sides of the cup with an awl. plastic cups that you should put or keep about an inch of vinegar in the bottom to attract the SWD. Next you should put out your vinegar cups for the Spotted Wing Drosophila that start getting active as the weather warms and berry and cherry crops ripen. You will want to monitor these traps weekly and follow my recommendations. You will need both a trap with a sticky bottom insert and the lures that have pheromone in them that can be placed inside the trap. These codling moth traps can be purchased at local farm supply stores. These catches are early before the codling moth have begun laying eggs so clean out the traps and wait for next week. One of my codling moth traps for apples and pears did pick up 4 moths over the past week and a second trap caught 6 moths. With a slightly above average heat unit accumulation year to date, insect emergence has been a little ahead of the twenty year averages. May 3 A mild dry spring pushed all the fruit trees to bloom about 1 week earlier than the 10-20 year average.
